BitMEX has announced that it will shut down its exchange on September 23, 2026, at 04:00 UTC, concluding 11 years of operations; new account registrations have been immediately halted. Following a strategic review, the board made this decision and requires users to close all positions and withdraw funds before the shutdown. BitMEX pioneered 100x leverage perpetual contracts, a format that later became the industry standard for crypto derivatives; its exit is directing open positions and liquidity toward other perpetual contract exchanges.
