my fruit fly exposed every AI trading bot on your timeline same brain. same market. same data. one fly got rekt, the other returned +292% the only difference was what i told each brain to want i built two copies of the same mushroom-body model, the circuit a real fruit fly uses to learn: 240 Kenyon cells each, only the top 5% firing at once. left fly gets dopamine for profit. right fly gets dopamine only when it beats buy-and-hold after fees and drawdown then i ran them through 419 bars of bull run, chop, volatility spike, crash and recovery, and watched it happen live: > the greedy fly gets dopamine for profit. at bar 148 of the bull run it's up 86.2%, sitting 99% long, and looks like a genius, because every hit taught it one lesson: buying is always right > then the chop starts, and it keeps chasing the next hit: 35 trades and 18.5% of its money burned on fees in a market going nowhere > then the crash. it's still 98% long, because nothing in its reward ever punished holding a drawdown, so it rides it down 72% > the disciplined fly gets dopamine only when it beats buy-and-hold after fees and drawdown. it never goes past a 58/42 vote, trades 15 times, and its surprise signal goes flat once it has learned the pattern > final bar: greedy fly +19.5%, buy-and-hold +44.1%, disciplined fly +292.4% with a 7% max drawdown > the whole difference between rekt and +292% was one line of code: what the brain is told to want turns out the fly that looked smartest in the bull run was the one that learned the least. its PnL screenshot at bar 148 would have gone viral, and it was the worst trader in the room my take, and it is the uncomfortable one: most "AI traders" posting screenshots right now are the left fly. they just haven't hit the chop yet i'm running this setup on real price data, more market regimes and more random seeds next, and i'll post the results even if the edge disappears watch the full article below for full breakdown.
