The Ideological Spark (1985) Before "open source" existed as a business term, software sharing was driven by ideology. In response to the rise of proprietary software and strict software copyright enforcement in the early 1980s, Richard Stallman launched the GNU Project (1983) and established the Free Software Foundation (FSF) in 1985. The Goal: To protect the moral and philosophical rights of users to share and modify code. The Mechanism: The FSF popularized the GNU General Public License (GPL), using copyright law defensively ("copyleft") to ensure that code remained free forever.
