How This Nor’easter Could Turn The Colonial Pipeline Into an East Coast Fuel Crisis What The Storm Is Bringing A powerful nor’easter is developing along the East Coast with the greatest risks centered on the Outer Banks, the Mid Atlantic coast and then New England. The main threats are not just rain and wind. The bigger concern is duration. Several tidal cycles of strong onshore flow can produce coastal flooding, beach erosion, dangerous surf, road closures and power outages even if the storm never becomes a hurricane. The Outer Banks are likely to feel the first major impacts. Coastal New Jersey, Long Island, Rhode Island, Cape Cod and coastal Massachusetts become increasingly vulnerable as the storm moves north. Why The Colonial Pipeline Matters Colonial is one of the most important refined fuel arteries in the country. It carries gasoline, diesel, heating oil, jet fuel and military fuels from the Gulf Coast toward the Southeast and East Coast, moving more than 100 million gallons each day. Its northern delivery network feeds into the New York Harbor region. But the pipeline itself does not need to physically break for fuel supply to become disrupted. The vulnerable parts are often above ground. Pumping stations need electricity. Terminals need power. Tank farms need to remain accessible. Receiving facilities need to be able to accept fuel. Roads and ports need to remain open so product can move beyond the terminal. What Would Have To Go Wrong A serious disruption would most likely require several problems happening together. • Sustained power outages affecting pumping or terminal operations • Flooding at receiving terminals or storage facilities • Safety shutdowns because equipment cannot operate securely • Port closures preventing replacement cargoes from arriving • Road flooding stopping tanker trucks from making final deliveries The geography matters. A severe storm over Cape Cod does not automatically shut Colonial down. The bigger pipeline risk would come from major problems around the New York and New Jersey receiving network or prolonged power failures at critical infrastructure. A New England focused storm could instead create a regional fuel shortage while Colonial continues operating normally into New York Harbor. What Happens If Deliveries Are Interrupted A short interruption can usually be absorbed through inventories and rescheduling. A multiday disruption becomes much more serious. Local storage begins falling. Replacement trucking cannot match pipeline volumes. Marine deliveries may also be delayed. Retail stations and airports begin competing for remaining supply. The key risk is not that America suddenly runs out of fuel. It is that fuel exists somewhere else but cannot reach the region that needs it. What NYMEX Could Do The most sensitive contracts would likely be New York Harbor gasoline and ultra low sulfur diesel. If deliverable fuel into New York Harbor becomes scarce, nearby gasoline and diesel futures could rise sharply. At the same time, WTI crude could move differently because crude is delivered at Cushing, Oklahoma and is not carried by Colonial. If refiners cannot move finished products and eventually reduce refinery runs, crude demand could weaken even while gasoline and diesel prices rise. That creates the possibility of a wider crack spread where refined products become much more expensive relative to crude. The Biggest Signal To Watch The storm itself is not enough. What matters is whether we begin seeing confirmed terminal outages, port restrictions, prolonged power failures, pipeline operating restrictions or measurable reductions in fuel deliveries. The biggest risk is therefore not physical destruction of Colonial. It is a regional logistics failure where fuel is still being produced but cannot reach consumers fast enough. That is when a weather event becomes an energy market event.
