What tech companies are now competing for isn’t whose AI is smarter, but who can become your default agent. Axios published an article today about Personal AI Assistants. At first glance, it reads like a roundup of new products—but what’s truly significant is that they’re all moving in the same direction. AI is shifting from “you ask, it responds” to being continuously online, constantly aware of what you’re doing. It will read your emails, calendar, and messages to understand who you’ve been in touch with, where you’re headed, and what’s coming up next. Beyond that, it will proactively decide when to act—booking your tickets, making purchases, placing calls, or even completing tasks on its own. Once this becomes reality, the AI assistant will no longer be just a tool or entry point—it will become a new intermediary layer between users and the entire internet. Previously, search engines decided what you saw first, and social platforms determined what content you consumed daily. The next generation of AI assistants may go further: they’ll directly decide which information is worth telling you, which tasks are worth doing for you, and which services should be invoked. The real prize being fought over now is an extremely scarce position: who can remain consistently by your side and gain the authority to act on your behalf. Once this position is secured, everything—from search and e-commerce to payments, travel, content, and even software access—could be reallocated accordingly.
