A floating data centre would use ocean heat to supply power for 32,000 homes and fresh water for 150,000 people. The vessel, named Kraaken, would put computing, electricity generation and seawater desalination on one offshore platform. Optimal Transit, the developer, estimates it could send 40 megawatts of electricity ashore and make 7.9 million gallons, or 30 million litres, of fresh water a day, while keeping 60 megawatts for AI computing. The design would take energy from the temperature gap between warm surface seawater and cold water far below. Warm water would heat a fluid such as ammonia until it turns to vapour. That vapour would drive a turbine to make electricity, then cold seawater would turn it back to liquid so the cycle can run again. Heat from the computer servers would add a further lift. The same thermal system would also help take salt out of seawater. In a low-pressure chamber, water can boil at much lower temperatures than usual. The vapour leaves the salt behind and is cooled back into fresh water. Electricity, water and data would reach shore through links built to detach. The company says the vessel could leave before major storms or move to communities that need emergency support. Kraaken remains a proposal, and the performance it promises has not been shown at this scale. Ocean thermal power needs huge volumes of seawater to be moved. Engineers would also need to show how the deep-water intake could disconnect safely and how much energy the pumps, desalination plant and the ship itself would use. The idea joins several existing technologies. The main test is whether they can deliver the promised power, water and computing on one movable vessel.
