No, there isn’t a human secretly typing 20% of your ChatGPT responses. But saying AI works “without humans” is also wrong. Here’s what actually happens: Humans have been paid to write ideal answers, create difficult prompts, rank multiple AI responses, flag hallucinations, label harmful content, and decide which answer is better. OpenAI’s InstructGPT work used human contractors to create demonstrations and compare model outputs. Those judgments became training data for reward models. The workflow is basically: Human judgment → AI generates options → humans rank them → model learns the preference → AI repeats it at scale. Today, some of those human evaluators are programmers, PhDs, lawyers, doctors and other subject-matter experts—not just generic “data annotators.” So when AI gives you a polished answer, a person probably isn’t sitting behind the screen approving it in real time. But thousands of human judgments helped teach the machine what a “good” answer should look like in the first place. AI didn’t eliminate the human layer. It compressed the human layer into the system.
