China regulating AI more than anyone else and still moving fast is a useful data point, not a slogan. The “if we regulate, China wins” line is too blunt. Beijing’s rules are built to keep the Party in control. Ours would have to be built to protect privacy, data, and open society. Same word, different project. Smart, targeted rules that preserve speed and values are possible. Blanket “don’t regulate or we lose” is just as sloppy as “regulate everything now.”
