Don’t misunderstand leverage. The first fortune of successful people often comes from leverage. This was also true for Charlie Munger, the wise and rational investor well known to stock market participants. In the early 1960s, Munger participated in five real estate projects, generating a total profit of $1.4 million, with much of the capital required to operate these projects sourced from bank loans. $1.4 million was a substantial sum at the time. Beyond real estate, in 1962 he also executed a famous arbitrage trade: buying shares of Canadian Pacific Power Company. This trade also involved leveraging significant capital, ultimately yielding approximately a 46% return. A truly rational investor never jumps to conclusions but instead analyzes each situation on its own merits.
