This is actually a great point. When people think about AI replacing jobs, they immediately think mass layoffs. But a huge part of the impact may simply be companies needing to hire fewer people as they grow. If 10 people leveraging AI can eventually do what used to require 20, those other 10 jobs may simply never get created. I’m already seeing this in my own consulting business. I originally planned on eventually hiring someone part time to handle a lot of the administrative work I don’t want to spend time on. Now, I’m realizing AI agents can handle a lot of those tasks for me and having someone train me to create these agents. It saves me time and money, while turning what would’ve eventually been a part time salary into a relatively small monthly expense. No one got laid off. But a job I otherwise would’ve created may no longer need to exist. That’s probably one of the more overlooked ways AI will impact the job market.
