A lot of traders say you don’t need to spend all day trading. I agree… but only partly. Once I take a trade, there usually isn’t much to do. The entry is done. The risk is set. Now I wait. Maybe certain conditions trigger my trade management. Otherwise, touching the trade just because I’m watching it usually creates more problems than it solves. But that doesn’t mean I stop watching the market. I spend a lot of time on the charts because I’m constantly testing my understanding of how price behaves. How does a new trend structure form? What happens after it forms? How does price behave when a level breaks? What does it look like when that level fails to break? What happened before the big move? Did it align with my edge? What happened after my entry confirmation? Did price behave the way I expected? Does the time of day change the reaction? I’m not sitting there trying to invent a new strategy every afternoon. I already have something that works. I’m watching how the market behaves around that foundation. Over time, individual observations start becoming recognizable patterns. Patterns become understanding. Understanding becomes small adjustments. And those adjustments improve execution. Trading itself is like cooking. You prepare the ingredients, light the fire and then let the food cook. You don’t keep opening the pot every 30 seconds because you’re impatient. But becoming a better cook? That never really stops. You learn ingredients. You learn combinations. You learn timing. You learn what improves the final result. Trading is similar. There might be very little to do once you’re actually in the trade. But there is almost no limit to how much you can learn from watching the market with purpose. Chart time isn’t the problem. Random chart time is. Build an edge first. Then let your observations deepen your understanding of something that already works.
