Bernie Sanders wants to permanently ban artificial superintelligence. I think that’s the wrong approach. A U.S. ban won’t stop AI development worldwide or force China to follow the same rules. If others keep advancing, America risks losing both technological leadership and its influence over how AI develops. The risks are real. We need strong safety standards, independent oversight, and accountability for companies developing powerful systems. But we also need to ask a much bigger question: How do we turn AI-generated wealth into income and opportunity for everyone? If AI performs an increasing share of productive work, funding society primarily through taxes on human labor becomes increasingly outdated. We need to rethink how we tax profits and economic value created through automation—and how those revenues benefit everyone. That could mean better public services, broader ownership of AI-driven businesses, or a social dividend that gives people a direct share of the wealth being created. The goal should be to ensure that AI’s gains translate into widely shared prosperity, rather than concentrating wealth and power in a handful of companies. How do we make AI work for all of humanity—and give everyone a stake in the value it creates?
