This is being heralded as some landmark victory by groups claiming they are making a major impact on university reform. It is not. The University laughs at a $600,000 settlement and the time and expenses surrounding it. To the institution, it is a minor budget item. It will absorb the cost, use it to justify more spending on lawyers and administrators, and continue operating exactly as before. The people responsible will probably endure no personal consequences whatsoever. Relative to his salary and benefits such as health insurance, the settlement represents perhaps two or three years of compensation. It does not give him back the years of his life spent on litigation or repair the damage to his career. Universities will now see him as someone with a dark cloud hanging over him. Corporate HR departments will see the litigation, label him a risk and quietly pass. His life will never be the same, while the university writes a check and moves on. This is not meaningful reform. It is a drop in the bucket and merely the cost of doing business for a university that knows the individual always has more to lose than the institution.
