Erik Haines addresses the problem of * the contemporary left’s tendency to cede religious, spiritual, and developmental territory to the conservative right. https://t.co/1yXvvhXGQT? "In Beyond the Master Signifier, I approached part of the problem through Wilber’s Pre/Trans Fallacy: the confusion of pre-conventional religious dogmatism with post-conventional contemplative development. Because authoritarian forms of religion can be oppressive, religion itself becomes suspect. Because hierarchy can dominate, hierarchy becomes synonymous with domination. The failures of Western Buddhism make those distinctions harder to hold. Guru scandals exposed abuses of authority, sexuality, hierarchy, and institutional power. Yet it does not follow that lineage, mentorship, disciplined practice, community, or developmental authority are therefore themselves the problem. Traditions can support growth while remaining open to criticism and correction. They can also become structures organized around protecting authority from correction. Learning to tell the difference is part of the work. I approached another version of this problem in On the Coming Age of the Rose, Facticity of the Cross, & Divine Revelation. The New Right and contemporary post-liberal Catholicism understand something about the formative power of religion that much of the secular left has forgotten. Religious communities possess ritual, inherited moral language, practices of formation, narratives of transcendence, and substantive accounts of the good."
