China’s solar fleet has overtaken coal for the first time. By the end of July, installed solar capacity reached about 1.29 terawatts, edging past coal at 1.285 terawatts and making solar the country’s largest power source by capacity. That is close to one-third of China’s total installed generation. Capacity is not the same as output: coal still supplies far more electricity because solar only generates when the sun is up.
