A former Cold War uranium-enrichment site in Kentucky is being positioned for a new strategic mission: powering the AI era. Brookfield and NextEra Energy have proposed a more-than-$100 billion data-center campus at the former Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant. The plan pairs up to 2 GW of natural-gas generation, up to 2.6 GW of battery storage, and transmission upgrades with a campus designed for up to 1.2 GW of computing capacity. The story is bigger than one campus. AI is no longer only a race for chips and data centers. It is a race for dependable electricity, storage, transmission, skilled workers, and the ability to build all of it on time. The next digital economy will be constrained and enabled by power.
