Thank you. Yes, one reason I am writing so much about this is that I want those structural conditions to change, so everyone who loves science and is capable of contributing has a viable path to pursue it. That also means moving people who do not want a life in science into successful, viable careers much earlier, rather than keeping them in years of unnecessary academic training. Academia should be reserved for the much smaller number who have both the interest and talent to make science their life’s work. As things stand, neither group is served well, at least in the life sciences. People who love science are pushed out, while people seeking other careers are kept in academic holding patterns far too long.
