Sending BTC is counterintuitive: in reality, nothing is “sent.” There are no transferable tokens on the Bitcoin blockchain, nor any account balance fields. All you own is a set of unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs) controlled by your private key. When you “send,” you are essentially: 1. Signing a transaction with your private key to declare the spending of certain existing UTXOs; 2. After miners include the transaction in a block, all network nodes synchronously update the UTXO set—the old UTXOs are marked as spent, and new UTXOs are created. In other words, there are no physical “coins” to send on the Bitcoin ledger; its essence is signatures combined with global state updates. Example: Suppose you control a 2 BTC UTXO and want to send 1 BTC to Saylor. The transaction will consume your 2 BTC UTXO and create two new UTXOs: • 1 BTC sent to Saylor’s address • Approximately 1 BTC (after deducting fees) returned to your own address as change After the global ledger updates, Saylor’s total controlled UTXOs increase by 1 BTC, while your total controlled UTXOs decrease by 1 BTC (plus fees). The total BTC supply remains unchanged—the fees simply enter a new UTXO owned by the miner. No physical object is moved; only the global state of “who has the right to spend which outputs” is synchronously updated through signatures and consensus.
