A single number without context is one of the most misleading ideas in personal finance. The chart has no idea what you owe. It doesn't know how many people your income supports, or what a normal month costs where you live. A 35-year-old with no debt in a small town and a 35-year-old carrying a mortgage and kids in New York sit in the exact same box on it, but they are not running the same race. This is why isolated benchmark numbers are so dangerous. They make people feel behind without telling them whether they’re actually improving. The comparison worth making is your own debt against your own assets, this year against last year. A chart ranking strangers by age isn't built to run that comparison, which is the whole problem with treating it as a scorecard. (This is commentary, not investment advice.
