I do want to get back to doing science, hopefully soon. Papers and datasets like this make me want to return. With current AI tools, what would have been a two-year coding project for a postdoc just two years ago can now be done almost instantly. Many novel insights can likely be discovered for less than $100 in compute, and many ideas immediately come to mind, especially when combined with other data. Some data might have to be newly collected, but most of what is needed is probably buried somewhere else. When I return, I will probably avoid the Cell, Nature, and Science paper game and stop worrying about citations and prestige inside the academy. My h-index is already around 100. That is enough. I have no interest in becoming a department chair, aside from the money it brings, joining a national academy, or collecting awards on the lecture circuit as Fauci continues to do. Even attracting the best talent to a large laboratory which the CNS papers used to help with matters far less than it once did. AI, lab automation, and cloud labs can perform much of the work that previously required large numbers of highly skilled personnel.
