Blackbeard supposedly hid a fortune that nobody ever found. Perfect security. Perfect failure. Watching the reaction to the Coldcard hack, I’m seeing plenty of highly technical advice about making Bitcoin as difficult as possible for an attacker to reach. Some of that advice may be sound in the right hands. But security decisions cannot be judged only by how technically or philosophically pure they appear. They also need to be deeply considered, battle tested and appropriate for the person expected to use them. A setup that its owner cannot confidently operate, verify and recover is not secure. A setup that their family has no realistic chance of navigating when something happens to them is not secure either. Good Bitcoin security should make theft extraordinarily difficult while ensuring the right people can still recover the Bitcoin when it matters. Blackbeard’s grandchildren would not have found the treasure either. Take the Coldcard issue seriously, but do not rush into a complicated solution you do not fully understand.
