AI IS NOT JUST TAKING JOBS. IT IS ERASING PROFESSIONS. A field experiment placed 776 Procter & Gamble professionals into real product-development tasks, with and without AI. Without AI, the division was predictable: R&D employees proposed technical solutions, while commercial employees focused on markets and customers. With AI, those boundaries nearly disappeared. The results: • One person with AI matched a two-person team without AI • AI-assisted individuals finished 16.4% faster • Commercial and technical workers began producing similarly balanced ideas AI effectively gave each specialist access to a second professional profile. @OpenAI later found the same pattern across more than 800,000 work-related ChatGPT messages. Among occupation-specific requests, 43.5% involved tasks normally associated with another profession. The crossover reached 77% for customer-experience workers, 75% for designers and 69% for HR. Marketers troubleshoot websites. Salespeople analyze datasets. Founders review contracts and financial models without immediately handing them to another department. The old workflow was specialist, handoff, specialist. AI lets one person cross several professional boundaries before the handoff is even necessary. Companies treating this only as a way to reduce headcount are missing the larger change. Teams, responsibilities and career ladders were designed around expertise remaining separated. That separation is beginning to disappear.
