People who say “bro just add a passphrase” are missing the point. This is not about a single bug. It is bigger. It is about a whole surface attack that was previously under appreciated with hardware wallets. You add a passphrase and think it did it, only to find out that your HWW brand had a supply chain attack. Secure element malfunction? Firmware bugs? Roll your own dice? how about the wallet incorrectly generating a seed based on your correct rolls? Memory malfunction? All I am saying is this needs a broader review of self custody security solutions. It doesn’t get fixed by simply tacking on another layer of complexity that will make self custody even harder and more prone to user errors. Hopefully new innovations will happen. Most hopefully, this will spark protocol upgrades that will increase security at the base layer (eg covenants).
