Everyone celebrates companies like Stripe, PayPal, Revolut, and Cash App. We trust them with our money, recommend them to friends, and build businesses on top of them. But the moment a Nigerian builds something similar, many of us become the first to predict its failure. Why? Is it because the product is bad, or because we have conditioned ourselves to believe that anything built abroad is automatically better than what is built at home? That mindset is a sign of a person being mentally poor and limited. Flutterwave was built by Nigerians. Paystack was built by Nigerians and went on to become one of Africa's most successful fintech companies. These companies didn't become successful because everyone believed in them from day one. They succeeded because they kept building, improving, and earned the trust of millions. Supporting Nigerian innovation does not mean lowering our standards. It does not mean ignoring security concerns or refusing to criticize poor decisions. It simply means judging our own companies by the same standards we use for foreign companies not by a harsher one. Constructive criticism builds companies. Blind condemnation kills them. There is another challenge we rarely talk about. Too many founders are racing to build the same thing. One payment app succeeds, and suddenly everyone wants to build another payment app. One crypto exchange grows, and dozens more appear. One digital bank trends, and everyone wants to launch another. Innovation is not about seeing what works and copying it. Innovation is about solving problems that nobody else is solving. Nigeria and Africa need builders who will create the infrastructure that powers the next generation of startups. We need breakthroughs in healthcare, education, agriculture, logistics, manufacturing, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, blockchain infrastructure, and countless other sectors that remain underserved. The companies that shape the future won't necessarily be the ones that copy today's winners. They will be the ones bold enough to create tomorrow's opportunities. So before we dismiss another Nigerian startup, ask yourself: If we don't support our own builders, who will? And if every founder is building the same product, who will build the future? The next global technology company can come from Nigeria. But only if we create a culture that rewards originality, demands excellence, and believes that world-class innovation can be built here.
