An AI model just found a flaw in a government-backed cryptography candidate. Anthropic says its unreleased Claude Mythos Preview discovered a working attack against HAWK-256, a post-quantum signature scheme, after ~60 hours of autonomous research using ~$100,000 in compute. What's interesting wasn't the vulnerability, but how it was found. The AI independently reviewed research, tested hypotheses, and uncovered a flaw that had gone unnoticed for 2 years. Bitcoin isn't affected today. But as AI accelerates cryptanalysis, the race to upgrade cryptography before quantum computing arrives just became a lot more urgent.
