I have spoken to 500+ people over the last few years on 1:1 calls who had single sig Bitcoin via Coldcard, Trezor, Jade, etc products. 100% I encouraged multi-jurisdictional multi-sig. Every single one. Why? This isn't over. This is the beginning. Some (apparently) relatively novice actor could steak 600 Bitcoin in less than an hour what do you think happens in the future? 8.4 billion people 1% are bad actors (84 million) 21 million Bitcoin There are going to be 4 bad actors per Bitcoin you own who will make it their mission to find your Bitcoin. If you hold Bitcoin on an exchange you have a company and country as a counterparty. If you hold Bitcoin in single sig you, possibly your hardware manufacturer, and likely your spouse/kids are counterparties. 99% of logical actors will not want a $100m bounty on their head or their kids head's. Over the years I've identified over 70 possible ways that Bitcoin can be stolen or lost... custody, legal, tax, life, business, and environment risks along with opportunity cost. Poor entropy via hardware device was #5 on that list. I am heartbroken by the fact numerous people have lost money and I suspect this will get 5-50x worse by the time it's over... and this is only beginning. Bitcoin self custody is not dead. However for years I've been predicting mid 2020s is peak single sig adoption. This is the signal: 🟠I think we just witnessed the peak of single-sig.🟠 This is not the time to say "Coldcard bad" or for people to say "told you so" as the fundamental problem was single points of failure - and that remains the case. This is exactly why I've never advertised a single hardware device... because most people don't need another car salesman selling cars they need a driving instructor. I've left a lot of money on the table by not taking those sponsorships, but I'm so glad I didn't. That isn't to say these products are bad - but they have single points of failure and I fundamentally don't believe in that. I passionately despise single points of failure. It is why we need Bitcoin in the first place. Paper BTC and multi-juristictional multi-sig are the future... and I strongly advocate for self custody over paper Bitcoin. If you lost money please know your soul and life is far more important to your family, myself, and God than the Bitcoin. Hugs your kids, follow Christ, and focus on your health. If you aren't aware of this situation yet (which is suspect is many many people) learn ASAP. If you are like the numerous people that have sent me messages this morning (like the one attached) - you're welcome. I've done the best I can. If you're trying to reach me please have patience as the need and requests are overwhelming. My phone number has been public for years 317-777-1020 give me a text and either I or a team member will help best I can. Again please have patience. Unfortunately I think most will learn the hard way. Reduce single points of failure. Including yourself. Including juristiction. Including trusted hardware products. Reducing single points of failure protects better than literally anything else can - including reputation and trust. So sorry, everyone. I am heartbroken of people's funds being drained and especially since the Bitcoiners are the monetary hope for the future. You guys are the nerds and autist psychopaths that so few people in the world support and so many take pleasure in hating on. Love you guys. 🧡
