1,100 people building AI signed a letter asking US government to help slow it down these aren't protesters or twitter critics. these are the engineers and scientists building the models at openai, anthropic, google, and meta dario amodei signed it personally. so did openai's chief scientist, anthropic's co-founders, meta's VP of AI research sam altman didn't sign. openai backed it as a company but sam kept his name off it these people have access to things we don't. internal benchmarks, capability jumps that haven't been published, safety reports that never left the building are they right though, should we actually slow down or is this just fear?
