Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping the economics of content creation, but not necessarily audience engagement. A recent study estimates that AI generated material now accounts for 41% of long form content on LinkedIn, 13% on Reddit, and 10% on Substack. AI has also gained significant traction in short form publishing, generating approximately 30% of LinkedIn posts and 12% of Substack posts. Yet the expansion in AI produced content has not translated into comparable audience engagement. On LinkedIn, AI generated posts receive, on average, 45% less engagement than content written by humans. This divergence highlights an important economic distinction: while artificial intelligence has dramatically reduced the marginal cost of producing content, it has not proportionately increased the value that audiences assign to it. As AI generated material becomes increasingly abundant, authenticity, original research, and human insight are becoming relatively scarcer and therefore more valuable forms of digital capital. In an environment where content supply is expanding exponentially, the ability to produce genuinely original, human driven analysis may emerge as one of the most durable competitive advantages across digital media. 🌱
