🚨 JAPAN QUITELY BECAME THE BIGGEST MARKET THREAT The Bank of Japan is now signaling it may hike rates faster than markets priced in Sounds routine, BUT hear me out Japan is boxed in by three problems at the same time: 1. The yen just broke past ¥163 per dollar - its weakest since 1986 A cheaper yen makes imported energy, food and raw materials pricier, feeding inflation straight back into the economy 2. Government debt sits around 240% of GDP, the highest in the developed world Every hike lifts Tokyo's own borrowing costs and makes that pile harder to carry 3. Intervention is losing its bite. Japan burned a record ¥11.73 trillion (~$72B) defending the yen between late April and May - and it kept sinking anyway The market no longer flinches at intervention measures That leaves the BOJ two bad choices: Hike faster -> stress the bond market, blow out debt-servicing costs Stay easy -> let the yen bleed and let inflation dig in permanently Neither ends well. And markets are increasingly pricing another hike by October Here's why this reaches far past Japan: Decades of near-zero rates turned the yen into the world's funding currency - the carry trade swelled into the trillions The last time the BOJ shocked markets with a hike, August 2024, it began unwinding fast: > Nikkei -12% in a single day, its worst since 1987 > S&P 500 -6% over three days > Bitcoin -17%, briefly under $50k If the BOJ is forced to move again while investors are still leaning on that trade, the next shock won't start on Wall Street It starts in Tokyo Follow + notifs on, I will keep you updated as this unfolds
