Strategy Chair Michael Saylor has doubled down on his strong opposition to BIP 110, warning that the proposal threatens the core principles of freedom, liberty, and decentralization that define Bitcoin (bitcoin:native). Saylor, who previously outlined 110 reasons against it, argues that attempting to reshape Bitcoin’s rules to control how others use the network is fundamentally statist and at odds with the values of liberty, property rights, and free markets. Bitcoin OG and Blockstream CEO Adam Back shares this view, describing BIP 110 as a downgrade rather than an improvement and suggesting its supporters misunderstand Bitcoin’s true nature and purpose. Yet not everyone agrees. Some in the community claim the proposal actually aligns with Satoshi Nakamoto’s original vision, particularly around preventing arbitrary data from spamming the Bitcoin chain. One even pulled out an old thread involving Satoshi where he told people that ECDSA is only for signing signatures, not for encrypting messages. Satoshi called permanently recorded plaintext messages in the network that everyone could see an “accident waiting to happen.” He recommended that if there’s going to be a message system for Bitcoin, the messages should not be embedded in the network. Instead, the messages should run on a system parallel to the Bitcoin network. Furthermore, Satoshi stated that users could sign the messages with their Bitcoin address keys as proof of their source. The heated discussion reveals deep divisions over Bitcoin’s future direction and what it means to stay true to its foundations.
