The Price of Privacy Groth16, the proving system used in Railgun, is extremely difficult to beat on verifier efficiency, meaning the cost of checking whether a proof is valid is very low. On Ethereum this translates directly to gas cost. The cheaper it is to verify a proof, the cheaper shielded transactions become for end users. This is one of the reasons Railgun chose it over newer but more computationally expensive proving systems. Kieran Mesko describes it as hitting a sweet spot between not being experimental moon math and still being performant enough to run practically inside a smart contract environment with real gas constraints.
