In the AI era, employment for young engineers has sharply declined. Since the release of ChatGPT, the U.S. software developer job market has shown an age-based divide: employment among those aged 22–25 has dropped by 23%, among those aged 26–30 by 5%, while those aged 41–49 have seen an 18% increase—creating a 41-percentage-point gap between young and experienced workers. The accompanying chart, from Bloomberg, is based on analysis of ADP payroll data by Stanford’s Digital Economy Lab, showing that the employment index for young coders has plummeted to around 75 since November 2022, while the index for those aged 41–49 has risen above 120.
