A crypto sleep app once paid selected users $50 an hour to sleep and test the product. Actual cash, plus merch and a gift card, for doing something everyone already does for free every night. The Dream Job Campaign, run by @sleepagotchi, is a small detail buried in an old AMA recap, but it's a genuinely smart piece of user research design. Most consumer apps run beta tests through Discord feedback forms and hope for engaged responses. Paying testers hourly to actually use the product under normal sleep conditions produces a different kind of data: real bug reports from real usage patterns, not just enthusiastic opinions from people who already like the brand. It also signals something about how seriously the team was treating the sleep tracking accuracy problem even before the AI pivot. Getting genuine feedback on whether the app correctly detects sleep stages, whether notifications interrupt rest, whether the reward timing actually aligns with waking naturally, requires people using it exactly as intended rather than gaming it for points. A cash incentive for authentic use is a more reliable signal than crypto rewards for engagement, which the whole industry already knows how to farm. Small operational choices like this rarely make it into pitch decks or funding announcements. But they're usually a better predictor of whether a team actually cares about product quality than any amount of investor messaging.
