THESIS (I hope you're sitting down): Mark Carney is complicit in the scene Donald Trump makes about every new Canadian tariff announcement, because he is looking to enact disruptive policies and needs cover to do so - that cover has been and will continue to be the love child of the Elbows Up Doctrine and National Sovereignty. These policies would have been have been completely unpalatable only two years ago. Things that would require "uncertain times" to execute. So, why not help manufacture the "uncertain times"? This is a bit of a spin on the @DoombergT thesis - The Chicken said (very early, I might add) that Carney would be the PM to end green energy and climate nonsense at the PMO and embrace the oil sands. He's done that. No doubt. There is building yet to be done but this is as encouraged as anyone could have imagined we'd be in 2026 (on that front). He was able to do this in no small part thanks to the new looming specter of the hostile USA. Now, I think he has an eye on dairy supply management and maybe another stalwart or two. Watch to see how this unfolds. Long and short - I no longer think this is a one-man (Trump) operation - these tariff tantrums are coordinated. I think what we're seeing here is a behind the scenes, extremely cooperative relationship (though entered into for different reasons) playing out in real time.
