In 1810, Goethe published his Theory of Colours (Zur Farbenlehre). He wasn't trying to build on Sir Isaac Newton’s physics; he wanted to dismantle them. Newton’s approach was forward-looking, objective, and analytical: he used a prism to split white light into a spectrum, proving that colors are the constituent parts of light. Light was everything; darkness was just a void-the absence of data. Goethe looked at Newton's model and inverted it entirely. He argued that Newton’s sterile laboratory experiments missed how humans actually experience reality. To Goethe, darkness was not an empty absence, but an active, polarizing force. Color is not found inside pure light; color is born exclusively at the battleground where Light meets Darkness.
