The question: Does the problem originate with this current government? It’s easy to point fingers at the current government, but many fail to acknowledge that the problem didn’t start here. Nigeria’s decline traces back to the 1970s oil boom, when the discovery of oil wealth pushed the country to abandon agriculture which was once the backbone of the economy, with groundnut, cocoa, and palm oil exports leading the world. That shift bred the over-reliance on crude oil that still defines (and destabilizes) our economy today. Add decades of military rule, the debt crisis of the 1980s, and the structural adjustment programs of 1986 that reshaped the economy without fixing its foundations, and you get a five-decade pattern of mismanagement. Every government since has inherited and worsened the same structural rot. Until we address the root cause instead of just the current face of it, we’ll keep recycling the same crisis under different names
