A lawyer called himself the Lottery Lawyer, appeared on national television giving advice to jackpot winners, became the most trusted attorney for the biggest lottery winners in America, then stole $107 MILLION from them. – Jason Kurland was a Long Island attorney who built his entire brand around one thing. – Helping lottery winners protect their money. He had counselled winners with a combined $2.5 BILLION in jackpots. – In October 2018 he appeared on the TODAY Show telling lottery winners exactly what to do with their prize money. – His advice was simple, hore a trusted lawyer immediately and never tell anyone you won. – That same month he took on his biggest client. The winner of a $1.5 BILLION Mega Millions jackpot. The largest ever paid to a single winner in American history. – Kurland told his clients to invest their money. – He pointed them toward businesses he secretly co-owned without disclosing it. – Every investment they made paid him a hidden kickback. – The businesses were partly controlled by Christopher Chierchio, a soldier in the Genovese crime family. – When the investments collapsed Kurland convinced his clients to pour more money into COVID personal protective equipment deals at the start of the pandemic. Those collapsed too. – During the scheme Kurland texted his co-conspirator asking "let me know if I'm keeping the Porsche Panamera or have to go back to my Lexus." – He was arrested in August 2020. – The FBI agents seized 13 bank accounts and placed liens on three properties simultaneously. – His defence at trial was that his partners had set him up as the fall guy and he was as much a victim as his clients. The jury convicted him on all five counts. – Total stolen or lost was about $107 MILLION. – The winner of the largest jackpot in American history lost $83 MILLION of it. – He was sentenced to 13 years in federal prison in June 2023. The judge told the court his luck had run out. The man lottery winners trusted most to protect their money was secretly working with organised crime to steal it.
