Most people pasting files into Claude are paying to have the entire document re-read on every single question, whether the answer lives in paragraph two or page forty. RAG fixes the actual mechanism. The chunking size matters more than it looks. Roughly 500 words per chunk with 100 words of overlap between them, so an answer sitting right on the boundary between two chunks never gets split apart and lost. The gap between pasting a file into chat and running actual retrieval is not complexity.
