The company building the most advanced AI in the world just asked everyone to slow down. Read that sentence again. Anthropic published a blog post this week warning that AI is approaching recursive self-improvement, the point where AI systems design, build, and train their own successors without humans driving each step. Their own internal data is what triggered the alarm. Claude now authors over 80% of the code merged into Anthropic's codebase. Their engineers are shipping 8 times more code per quarter than they were before 2025. Not because the engineers got smarter. Because the AI is doing most of the work. Anthropic's conclusion: the technology is moving faster than the institutions designed to govern it. Their proposed solution is a globally coordinated pause. Modelled on Cold War nuclear treaties. Requiring verification that every frontier lab has actually stopped, and that no bad actor uses the pause to jump ahead in secret. Now here is the part the TV anchors are dancing around. Anthropic filed confidentially for its IPO the same week this essay dropped. Critics are calling it regulatory capture. A strategic move to slow competitors under the cover of safety messaging. The same playbook Elon Musk ran in 2023 when he backed the Future of Life Institute pause letter while building xAI in the background. Maybe. Or maybe the people closest to the technology genuinely believe what they are saying. Both can be true at the same time. Safety concerns and competitive advantage are not mutually exclusive. What is not debatable is the data point buried in the essay. AI is already accelerating the development of AI. The question is not whether that is happening. The question is whether any treaty, any regulation, or any coordinated pause can actually stop it once the economics point in the other direction. History suggests the answer is no. The crowns were never up for debate.
