Lately, everyone has been wondering whether SpaceX will be immediately added to the S&P 500 upon its listing. Newly public companies cannot bypass the queue just because their market capitalization is large. They must still wait 12 months and meet basic requirements such as profitability and public float. I actually think this isn’t a bad thing. Indices shouldn’t greenlight a company simply because it’s flashy or massive in size. No matter how highly anticipated an IPO may be, it should first be priced by the market.
