New York Post White House correspondent Emily Goodin posted that “before boarding Air Force One to depart from Beijing, the entire U.S. delegation discarded all items provided by their Chinese hosts—everything, including gifts, badges, pins, and souvenirs, was immediately thrown into the trash. The directive was absolute: no items of Chinese origin were permitted onboard. This precaution extended beyond departure; members of the delegation were required to leave all personal electronic devices at home prior to traveling to China and used only clean, disposable cell phones during their trip.” This was true. These measures, in line with guidelines from the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) and the State Department, are standard and correct protocols designed to mitigate the risk that Chinese-origin devices or gifts could harbor spyware, malware, or electromagnetic tracking capabilities.
