I've attended events every night since I moved to SF. 🌉 Here's what I've learned about the event game here: 1. They hate Partiful. SF event organizers treat Partiful like a plague, with overwhelmingly negative sentiment toward it. Luma they prefer, nearly universally. 2. No platform has true lock-in or a particularly strong moat. Luma's popularity seems very new, likely only established within the last year. From speaking to event organizers, they usually say "yeah Luma just started to get really popular". Previously it was scattered between Eventbrite, Meetup, Luma, and Partiful. Lock-in does not seem very strong for any competitor 3. Existing platforms still lack what organizers want. The specific desires depend on the organizer, but no one I've met would say they're 100% happy with the options being offered right now. They are either too simplistic, too limiting, poor UI/UX desig, or unfair and inconsistent with distribution methods. 4. RSVPs are a problem. Event organizers have told me they generally expect less than half the RSVPs to show up. This is a problem. People just spam RSVP to every event and don't show up. Organizers should not have to bake this into their planning. RSVPs should mean something, reliability should be valued. 5. Users get nothing from the event platforms. Post-event connection and discovery is still poor, if not nonexistent. You can go to the event, but finding people relevant to you during and after is completely unsolved and one of the biggest missing pieces from existing platforms. It's been great meeting the builders and hustlers of the Bay, and very insightful to speak to them and the organizers of the events. Every one of these problems will be fixed with @lolo_IRL.
