According to Getty, more than 12 million of its images were scraped to train Stable Diffusion. Getty sued Stability AI in the UK and largely lost the case in November 2025, aside from a narrow trademark win tied to Getty watermarks in generated outputs. The images were never free. The value they created did not disappear. Ownership without a trail is just a claim. Provenance is what puts a number on it.
