⚡️ Bitcoin: first working prototype of anti-quantum tool for wallets Olaoluwa "Roasbeef" Osuntokun, CTO of Lightning Labs, has unveiled the first working prototype of a tool designed to safeguard Bitcoin wallets in the event of an emergency upgrade activation against quantum computers. The announcement was made on April 8, 2026, via the Bitcoin developers mailing list. The prototype addresses a specific vulnerability introduced by BIP-360, a quantum defense proposal that includes a potential "emergency brake" to disable Bitcoin's current digital signature system. While such a measure would block quantum computers from forging signatures, it would simultaneously freeze all wallets relying solely on that mechanism — including Taproot wallets — making funds inaccessible even to their legitimate owners. Osuntokun's solution offers an alternative recovery route: rather than proving ownership through a digital signature, the system allows users to mathematically demonstrate they created the wallet using the original secret seed, without revealing it. On a high-end consumer MacBook, proof generation took approximately 55 seconds, verification under two seconds, and the resulting proof file weighed around 1.7 MB. The system has not yet been optimized, and no formal proposal to integrate it into Bitcoin exists at this stage. Developers remain divided on the urgency of the quantum threat, with academic researchers noting that large-scale attacks on Bitcoin still face significant physical limitations. Osuntokun's prototype nonetheless fills a long-standing gap in Bitcoin's quantum contingency planning. https://t.co/2IAiAu43X1
