Amazon +15%. Apple −7.4%. Nasdaq +1%. That was not a broad tech rally. It was a two-stock tug of war. Apple erased $357.8 billion after its September-quarter forecast missed expectations—the company’s largest one-day market-cap loss on record. Amazon’s accelerating cloud sales produced its biggest market-cap gain ever and pulled the Nasdaq into the green. But the risk backdrop did not disappear. The 10-year Treasury yield reached 4.743%, while the 30-year hit 5.274%—a 19-year high. Even the bond market reacted. The spread on Amazon’s 6.1% bonds due in 2056 narrowed from 1.23 to 1.10 percentage points. The message is getting sharper: markets will still reward AI and cloud spending, but only when the revenue and financing math hold up.
