Amazon just closed one of the largest strategic bets in AI history. Amazon has completed its full $50 billion investment in OpenAI, locking in roughly a 5% stake in the company now valued near $852 billion. The deal, first announced in February, began with an initial $15 billion. The remaining $35 billion was originally tied to specific milestones (including a potential IPO or technical breakthroughs). Amazon wired the full amount anyway, after OpenAI’s April renegotiation with Microsoft opened the door for other cloud providers. This is far more than equity. It deepens a commercial partnership of unusual scale: AWS becomes the exclusive third-party cloud distribution partner for OpenAI’s Frontier platform (built for deploying teams of AI agents). OpenAI expands its existing AWS infrastructure agreement by another $100 billion over eight years. OpenAI commits to consuming approximately 2 gigawatts of Amazon’s Trainium capacity, helping Amazon push its custom chips against Nvidia while still co-investing alongside it. The broader picture is striking. Microsoft still holds the largest outside stake. SoftBank and Nvidia have poured in tens of billions each. Amazon now sits at the table with both equity and long-term compute commitments. The same companies are funding the labs, supplying the chips and cloud, and locking in the future revenue those labs will generate. Capital is circulating tightly among a handful of giants. The real test will be how quickly that capital turns into durable, external revenue. A defining moment in the infrastructure race that will shape the next decade of AI.
