How advanced have scammers become? They now use AI to fabricate images of a political figure being “arrested,” then exploit this fake “arrest news” to trick you into investing in cryptocurrencies. Recently, a flood of ads featuring Jagmeet Singh, former leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, has appeared on X. These include photos of him holding suspicious bags, footage of his alleged arrest, and even mugshots. Clicking through leads to a forged CBC news article claiming Singh was arrested for exposing the secret profit mechanism of an AI investment platform. The platform promises that investing just 350 CAD can generate monthly returns of 1,200 to 2,800 CAD. Of course, it’s all fake. But what’s truly fascinating is the organized criminal ecosystem behind this scam. CBC and Radio-Canada previously conducted undercover investigations into诈骗 call centers in Eastern Europe and discovered that, in Kyiv, Ukraine alone, there are large-scale operations specifically targeting Canadians. Their operations are highly specialized: some create fake news and ads, others buy social media traffic, some build investment websites, and finally, call center “investment advisors” take over to systematically drain victims’ funds. AI has made the front-end production incredibly cheap. Today, they can make Singh appear arrested; tomorrow, they can fabricate a story of Canada’s Prime Minister announcing a secret investment plan. Just swap the person, rewrite the copy, change the domain—and launch another campaign. The most absurd part? These scam ads have become a fully scaled business, yet social platforms still respond by simply deleting individual ads. Even more outrageous: the scammers still pay the platforms for ad placement. Scammers have customer acquisition costs, platforms earn ad revenue, and call centers take sales commissions—every link in the chain profits. Only the victims lose money.
