AI’s biggest winners are openly warning about mass unemployment while building the very technologies driving that disruption. As Palantir CEO Alex Karp has argued, extreme wealth inequality isn’t new. Throughout history, however, it was often tempered by shared communities, institutions, and cultural ties between those with wealth and everyone else. Today, much of that social fabric has already eroded. AI has the potential to create unprecedented levels of wealth concentrated in the hands of a small group whose experiences, incentives, and daily realities are increasingly disconnected from the broader population. The question isn’t whether AI will create extraordinary value. The real question is whether society can ensure that value is shared broadly enough to strengthen our communities rather than deepen existing divides.
