I’ve long wanted to write about Cook. For many years, whenever we talked about Apple, one question always came up: Did Cook have any innovation? With Jobs leaving behind such a towering legacy, it was easy for anyone who followed to be trapped in constant comparison. The Apple Watch, AirPods, buybacks, supply chain, M-series chips—even today’s AI—ultimately all got pulled back to that one phrase: “What if Jobs were still here?” But I’ve come to believe this might not be the best way to understand Cook. What he truly did was transform Apple from a company reliant on the genius of its founder into a system capable of operating sustainably for decades. How products are manufactured, how chips are brought in-house, how privacy boundaries are maintained, how the supply chain is globalized, how money is spent, and even how the next CEO is prepared to take over—all of this became his focus. Many of these efforts seemed dull at the time, even mocked as “just operations.” But looking back fifteen years later, they’ve become Apple’s most difficult-to-replicate strengths. The most fascinating twist? Just before Cook stepped down, OpenAI began bulk-purchasing Macs to train its Agents. A company long criticized for missing the AI wave suddenly found that its decades-long investments in chips, software, hardware integration, and supply chains had become essential infrastructure for AI companies. So what I really want to write isn’t an article debating Cook’s successes and failures. What I’m more curious about is: What can a leader leave behind when they don’t rely on genius narratives or reinventing the world every few years? After writing this, I think the answer is far more complex than just “innovation.”
