A recent quantum security analysis of the XRP Ledger by validator Vet shows that 231.6 billion XRP are secure from threats, as their keys have been rotated or never used. Approximately 0.02% of the supply, tied to Genesis accounts, remains exposed. Ripple is advancing a four-phase plan to make the network quantum-resistant by 2028. The findings come amid ongoing Bitcoin news regarding potential security vulnerabilities in legacy systems.
CoinDesk reports:

In a recent tweet, the XRP Ledger validator Veterinarian published the results of a comprehensive historical analysis of 7.8 million (7,810,364) XRP accounts to assess the quantum threat risk to dormant accounts.

Vet summarized this result in a tweet, noting that the genesis XRP account (considered the equivalent of the “Satoshi era” account) accounts for 0.02% of all dormant and exposed XRP supply. The “Satoshi era” is a Bitcoin term commonly referring to tokens actively circulating in the early days of cryptocurrency.

A comprehensive historical analysis was conducted on all 7.8 million XRP accounts to identify quantum threat risks targeting dormant accounts.

Genesis XRP accounts (equivalent to Satoshi-era accounts) account for 0.02% of all XRP supply and are dormant and exposed.

It has been observed that as the dormancy threshold decreases, the exposed supply increases. However, 23.16 billion XRP remain fully quantum-secure. These accounts have either rotated their keys or have never signed a transaction (received only).

Details

Analyzing Vet, we first reviewed the complete transaction history of all XRP accounts, excluding dormant ones. The results showed that 76.82 billion XRP (or 5.6 million accounts) are at quantum risk, with 96% being active accounts. This means these accounts have recently signed transactions and are expected to soon migrate to quantum-secure XRP accounts.

Taking dormancy into account, dormant quantum-exposed accounts account for 2.94% of the total XRP supply (or 3.83% of all exposed XRP).

0.02% of the total supply is in wallets that have been used only once and have not been used since 2013.

Approximately 27.21% of the total population, XRPL currently has 2.13 million accounts (holding 23.16 billion XRP) in a quantum-secure state. These accounts are divided into two categories: 24.56% of accounts have never broadcast a signed transaction (so no public key currently exists on the ledger); the remaining approximately 2.65% of accounts have actively rotated their authorization and disabled their master key.

Vet also noted that 242 multisignature wallets (holding approximately 36.6 billion XRP, or 36.6% of the total supply) are in a state where the signers' public keys have reached quorum, and these wallets include Ripple’s custodial distribution wallets.

XRP continues to advance toward its quantum future. Ripple recently announced a four-phase plan aimed at making the XRP Ledger quantum-resistant by 2028.
